AZEK Building products continues its product innovations by adding the 10-inch wide AZEK Universal Skirt Board to its current trim offering. Providing the perfect transition between the siding and trim, as well as assisting in water management, the wider profile allows more design flexibility and fits nicely into historic architectural styles that utilize wider trim.
The two-piece AZEK Universal Skirt Board includes a reversible trimboard (which can be used as Traditional smooth or Frontier texture) that is routed to accept a proprietary universal siding interface. It is “universal” in that it accepts fiber cement siding, vinyl, cedar shingles or wood.
The siding interface, with an integrated nailing flange and drip edge to assist with keeping water away from the foundation, includes a rigid pvc hook to accept vinyl siding and a flexible pvc flap to work with solid siding. Once the siding interface snaps into the trimboard, it stays securely in the board and cannot be removed after installation. With no need for starter strips, AZEK’s Universal Skirt Board saves time, labor and costs.
In addition to the new 5/4 X 10″ profile, the AZEK Universal Skirt Board is also available in 5/4 X 8″ and 5/4 x 6″-all in 18 ft. lengths, with a 1 ½ inch nailing flange and ¼ inch drip edge overhang.
Like all AZEK Trim products, AZEK Universal Skirt Board is designed to last beautifully, is impervious to moisture and insects, and is covered by a 25-year Limited Warranty.

Experiencing after hour’s relaxation and entertaining doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down any longer. The new AZEK Rail Lighting products include two eclectic styles of Lighted Post Caps and one Under Top Rail Lighting addition. And, for an even more dramatic effect, the AZEK Under Rail Lighting kit can be used in conjunction with the existing roster of caps or the new AZEK Lighted Post Caps.
AZEK Lighted Post Caps include the Villa™ Cap, available in White and Black, and the Island Cap, available in White, Black, Brownstone and Kona®. Both cap styles include multiple LEDs to provide ambient lighting, fit all AZEK 5X5 Rail Post sleeves, and complement existing post cap styles. The Villa Cap even includes frosted glass on all sides to provide greater visual aesthetics.
AZEK Under Top Rail Lighting provides a sleek lighting option that tucks neatly under the top rail which is designed to work with either AZEK Premier or AZEK Trademark Railings. The patent pending lighting system does not require extra fasteners and is virtually hidden from view. The LED lighting strips, which can be cut to fit any length of railing, fit into a complementary semi-rigid extrusion and then press easily between the top rail retainer and top rail. Available in six and eight foot rail sections, AZEK Under Top Rail Lighting provides continuous soft-tone downward lighting without visually bright spots. This unique design was developed after careful research to determine the proper hue, amount, and direction of lighting to create the best atmosphere after dark.
The AZEK Under Top Rail Lighting kit and Lighted Post Caps are powered by 12 Volt DC power. AZEK Power Packs, with either a 35Watt or 200Watt transformer, are sold separately and contain all the components needed to easily install the AZEK Rail Lighting products.

Today, savvy consumers, high-end builders and remodelers are making product choices that not only are economically sound, but also provide lasting beauty, offer low-maintenance and a good return on investment. One such item is time tested clear vertical grain western red cedar trim which is well known for its natural good looks, long term performance and exceptional paint adhesion.
In the Northeast it was not long ago that that the standard exterior trim used was any number of a variety of pine boards. Eastern, Western or Sterling Idaho was commonly used. Pine boards with big knots, with tight knots, raw or knot sealed and primed. Then came along clear finger jointed pine boards that were primed, primed and buffed and now insect and rot treatments are applied along with warranties that have more loopholes that the US tax code. It can be argued that many issues with some wood trim products are in large part due to specie, grade choice and the coating and installation practices used. All these factors impact long-term satisfaction and performance. While wood trim is the dominant exterior product used today, the advent of products made from cement, compressed wood and poly-ash are making inroads. When considering the Life Cycle Assessment of any better quality trim product, the initial purchase price may seem high but as opposed to what? One such product is PVC trim boards. Let’s examine this further.
Category shifts have been occurring for years in the building products industry. Examples include: felt paper to house wrap, wood doors to fiberglass doors and wood decking to composite. Now the deck board of choice seems to be any number of synthetic options. Trim is no different. Its characteristics of working like wood, decay resistance, insect resistance and low or no moisture absorption make it a great choice for a multitude of applications.
Category leading AZEK Building Products produces a trim that is a “free-foam” processed board which provides a consistent density and a core that allows it to work much like that of high quality white pine. This consistency makes AZEK ideal for routing, milling, molding and heat forming (bending). AZEK Trimboards are well suited for non-structural applications (unless reinforced with a structural membrane). AZEK Trimboards and sheets are the perfect choice for moisture prone applications and can be installed in direct contact with the ground or masonry. Some examples include: window and garage door casing, fascia and soffits, corner boards and deck trim. Others include: column wraps, pergolas, cupolas and outdoor shower stalls.
AZEK Trimboards can be fastened much like wood. Two stainless steel nails that penetrate 1 ½” into the substrate every 16” are appropriate. Like wood boards, a third fastener for boards 12” or wider are strongly suggested. AZEK Trimboards and sheets can be painted but it is not necessary if the factory produced white finish is desirable. Because AZEK doesn’t absorb moisture, paint finishes last years longer. However, when selecting a dark paint color (Light Reflectant Value LRV of 54 or lower), consider using a high quality 100% acrylic paint designed specifically for that type of application.
By following some simple guidelines and good building practices, NAHB Green Approved AZEK Trimboards, Mouldings and sheet goods will deliver many years of low maintenance and lasting beauty.
According to the Freedonia Group which is a leading international business research company, wood will remain the leading material for trim and mouldings but demand for alternative products such as AZEK Trimboards will increase as a rebound in residential building occurs.

AZEK has made number of dramatic improvements to its rail system for the 2011 season. Not only were they able to enhance the look of the railing, but clever design changes will save the installer time and provide the homeowner a cleaner and more natural millwork look.
AZEK Rail Hardware
The newly designed AZEK Rail hardware kits include a neat and tidy hidden fastener. The concealed fastener is all 316 stainless steel and is highly rust resistant, especially in coastal applications. The re-engineered hardware has not lost any of its strength and safety attributes that it was been well-known for. There are also two new pieces of hardware that are particularly noteworthy. The push start baluster screws and the swing baluster bracket are sure to reduce labor and prevent over drilling.
AZEK 5″ x 5″ Post Sleeve
The post sleeve has been re-engineered for ease of installation and great looks. The 5” x 5” ribbed interior sleeve provides the building owner with a beefy profound millwork appearance and reduce the possibility of movement. Three sleeve lengths are now offered to reduce or possibly even eliminate cutting the sleeve depending on the application. The new wider profile also allows for the railing to be cut at more aggressive angles than what can be done with a traditional 4” x 4” sleeve.
AZEK Rail Installation
With re-engineering of the AZEK Rail installation hardware, AZEK was not only able to create a concealed fastener, but reduce installation time. What was historically a two person job can now be achieved by one installer. This will allow the installer to move on to the next project quicker and allow the homeowner enjoy their deck quicker.
AZEK Gate Hardware Kit
The high demand AZEK Gate option is available in either a single or double configuration in rough openings of 42 ¼” (single opening) and 83 ¼” (double opening). At this time these gates can not be cut down to a smaller custom size due to the internal metal bracing components. AZEK gates are carefully packaged in a kit similar to the way the rail kits are currently prepared. Either size option is designed to work in tandem with both the 36” and 42”’ high rail sections which allow for a nice level sightline. AZEK Gate Kits are available in six designer colors to match AZEK Trademark or Premier Railing. The proprietary self closing hardware system with a locking latch provides the building owner peace of mind from wandering children or pets.
